A Shout Out to Kuchen Makers

During the upcoming Sundogs and Sunflowers exhibit The Art Center would like to feature the traditional, regional specialty: Kuchen. This much loved and sometimes guarded, sweet blend of pastry/bread topped with a cheese or fruit filling doesn’t need much introduction. Kuchen recipes vary from family to family–some baking the tasty dessert completely from scratch and others taking short cuts.

You might be wondering why Kuchen? The upcoming exhibition is based on the award-winning book of the same name Sundogs and Sunflowers: Folklore & Folk Art of the Northern Great Plains. We sometimes forget that food is an important part of traditional arts and Kuchen-making joins Monster Fish, Haunted Houses, Duck Decoys and Sunflower Pie in this exploration of folk art and folklore that is rich part of our regional identity.

The exhibit will be showing November 27 through the holidays and is a great exhibit for the entire family.

EXHIBIT OPEN HOUSE Saturday, December 7    12:00 am – 2:00 pm

We are looking for volunteers to make a few kuchen for this event. If you are interested helping us by baking and sharing your family’s treasured kuchen–please contact the Arts Center at 701-251-2496.

The Open House will be included in a day full of Art Center Holiday fun beginning at 10:00 am with Kid’s Christmas Gift Shop •- Christmas In a Jar”. Send your kids our way for the morning as they create fun gifts for the family. Students will decorate themed jars, and fill them with treats for family members! Cookie decorating and a mini art lesson will also be happening. $10 per child. The Sundogs and Sunflowers book, published by the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) and compiled and edited by North Dakota State University Professor Emeritus Dr. Timothy J.
